Presentation review: From Tragedy to Transcedence: The Creative World of J.S. Bach by Steven Hancoff

On November 28th, 2016 I had the pleasure of attending a presentation prepared by Steven Hancoff in Victoria, BC.

The 1 1/2 hour presentation was narrated by Steven himself and was divided into 6 parts, each with a multi-media presentation.  The narration was both informative and interesting with doses of poetic prose and and dry humour throughout.   He took a subject that could have been dry and turned into a fascinating story about the life of J. S. Bach.  Hancoff is a talented public speaker and makes his audience feel at ease.  The background music of the multi-media portion of the presentation was Steven playing the acoustic guitar.  The innumerable pieces of artwork that accompanied the multi-media presentation were both interesting and varied as they dated from the time of Bach himself to the present.

He included a segment about Casals, the Spanish musician and his miraculous discovery of the six ’Cello Suites by Pablo Casals in a Barcelona thrift shop and why he studied them for twelve years before performing them in public.

Bach, Casals and the Six Suites for ’Cello Solo invites readers and music lovers into a unique experience, contained in an immersive four-volume e-book from Steven Hancoff – a virtuoso musician’s restless, passionate, multimedia exploration of a musical masterpiece that only grows in stature almost three centuries after it was written.

Steven graciously played for us at the end of the presentation.
