Meet the author:  “In my mind, words came in strides. They aligned themselves in arguments that were ready for combat after rebelling themselves – and that was just inkling. Were was my certainty to support the new image? And where were my emotions, with their brushes to bring color to life?”  Born in the interior of the state of Paraná, Cassia Cassitas accumulated various degrees throughout her carreer in Information Technology. The author of three novels, her texts convey ideas accumulated amidst the smell of coffee plantations, shoe factories, and the technology of the 20th century. REVIEW:
~

Riding is a narrative about a little boy who grows up to pursue his passion for cycling. What we don’t know until about 3/4 through the book is that Andre has no feet and his good friend, Dr. Eureka has fitted him with prosthetics (I think). This story is about Andre’s training and desire to compete in the Paralympics.

The book begins with a description of Mario’s (Andre’s father) work and his involvement with Olympic installations at the different Olympic locations around the globe. Mario travels extensively and Andre and his mother settle in Curitiba, Brazil. Their respective careers seem to take precedence over their family life and it was really hard to develop an affinity for the three as a family unit. Elizabeth spends a lot of time at home and develops a love of reading philosophy, which she shares with Andre.

I found the first part of the book that dealt with the Olympic installations to be very interesting, as I worked with the Olympics in the past. The “family” part of the story seems to be an add-on to the “serious” stuff of the Olympics. I felt that two separate books would have been better. The translation was a little stiff and dry and Andre’s thoughts and feelings as a child sounded too much like that of an adult. I can imagine that the original language version of this story would have been far more meaningful.

I really struggled to get through this book because it lacked coherence. It would bounce back and forth between themes and I was often lost. Until I discovered that Andre had prosthetics, I couldn’t understand why his mother was so overprotective of him.

I admire a young person’s drive and determination to prove that, despite his limitations, he can do whatever he puts his mind to. I am sure Andre is an inspiration for other paralympians.imgres

Book review: Circling the Sun by Paula McLain

9780345534187_custom-16549d50e9c82f945b3f8de3d84f5aa55778c9d0-s300-c85

  • Hardcover: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Ballantine Books (July 28, 2015)

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Paris Wife, now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa.

Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature’s delicate balance. But even the wild child must grow up, and when everything Beryl knows and trusts dissolves, she is catapulted into a string of disastrous relationships.

Beryl forges her own path as a horse trainer, and her uncommon style attracts the eye of the Happy Valley set, a decadent, bohemian community of European expats who also live and love by their own set of rules. But it’s the ruggedly charismatic Denys Finch Hatton who ultimately helps Beryl navigate the uncharted territory of her own heart. The intensity of their love reveals Beryl’s truest self and her fate: to fly.

Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain’s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

author_photoPaula McLain was born in Fresno, California in 1965. After being abandoned by both parents, she and her two sisters became wards of the California Court System, moving in and out of various foster homes for the next fourteen years. When she aged out of the system, she supported herself by working as a nurses aid in a convalescent hospital, a pizza delivery girl, an auto-plant worker, a cocktail waitress–before discovering she could (and very much wanted to) write. She received her MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan in 1996.

She is the author of The Paris Wife, a New York Times and international bestseller, which has been published in thirty-four languages. The recipient of fellowships from Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, the Cleveland Arts Prize, the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, she is also the author of two collections of poetry; a memoir,Like Family, Growing up in Other People’s Houses; and a first novel, A Ticket to Ride. She lives with her family in Cleveland.

REVIEW:

I almost felt like I needed to brush the dust off my clothes as I put down this book. The beautiful descriptions of Kenya and life in the bush and the spunkiness of a young girl raised on a horse ranch in the African countryside drew me into the storyline. The story piqued my curiosity about the true life story of Beryl Markham. I intend to read more about this incredible woman whose fierce independence and determination won her the title of first woman horse trainer and first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1936.

The characters were well-developed and although the storyline flew along through several decades, I was never confused.

A good read for those who love both history, romance and adventure.

Review:  This was just the book I needed.  I have a book for sale on Amazon and never really understood all the steps required to properly promote my book.  Penny’s book came with some practical flash cards entitled “RED HOT book hacks” that you can use as reminders every time you sell a book on Amazon.  She also included other cards called “TIPS” that teach you to promote your book properly. There are illustrations taken from Amazon.com that teach you how to navigate around its website.  (this is very Indiana Jones!) The book is divided into these sections:

  • understanding Amazon
  • what publishing looks like now
  • how to research keywords
  • creating bestselling book ideas
  • keyword strategies for greater visibility
  • simple keyword success strategies to rock your book
  • the importance of Amazon categories
  • Amazon themes
  • Amazon book pricing
  • (etc.  there are so many more!)
As I read through the book I kept marking areas that I need to work on but I had so many that I will just highly a few, i.e.:
– getting reviewed
– gifting e-books
I plan to sit down and go through each chapter and work on my author page as well as re-work the keywords for my book.  I also need to work at getting more reviewers. This book is going to be “super useful” as I plan to publish another book in the near future and I want to promote it properly.  Thanks Penny for all the hard work you put into this practical guide!
