Book Description:

It’s 1972 and a seismic clash-of-cultures is rattling northern California. In the redneck town of Trinity Springs, rumors of hippies migrating up from San Francisco have residents bracing for an invasion. When Italian-American hometown boy and Berkeley graduate Sid Jackson is busted for growing pot on his deceased parents’ farm, locals suspect the assault has begun. Will a crazy deferral program devised by the sheriff keep Sid out of prison? Or will a house full of eccentric strangers, a passionate love interest, and demons from his past be his undoing?

A “disarmingly appealing” tale of discrimination, transformation and restoration, Freaks is bursting with intrigue, drama, comic relief and romance. Reviewers agree this five-star, coming-of-age classic “very much reflects the attitude and mood of the times.”

Praise for A Year in the Company of Freaks:

“This coming of age story will draw the reader right in. Teresa Neumann demonstrates how much she values relationships in her writing … a precious skill. I held my breath all the way through to the final few pages. Five stars!” — The San Francisco Book Review

“As it relates to the complicated clash of culture and counterculture, Freaks acts as an authentic, strongly Seventies book. Northern California works as a strong presence in the novel that is vivid and omnipresent, but never overwhelming. Sure to intrigue and entertain, Freaks will have its digs in you before you realize how involved you’ve become.” — The Manhattan Book Review

REVIEW:  (by Anne Benard)

Well this novel certainly surpassed my expectations!  The narrative quickly grabbed my attention and kept me intrigued all the way through. I found it to be a real page turner due to its interesting storyline and well thought out character development. I appreciate that the personalities in this novel are multifaceted and not the usual stereotypes that are often found in fiction.  It’s obvious that the author based her tale on real people facing issues that we can all recognize and easily identify with.  Being a child of the 70s I also appreciate that the language and description of the era is authentic to the times. Thanks for the ‘trip’ Ms. Neumann, it was fun. An entertaining read that I would highly recommend.

About Laura Fabiani:

In 2008, Laura began blogging about books shortly after she published her first book. She started Library of Clean Reads, a book review blog, and discovered the joy of reviewing a variety of genres. Her children have joined her in this venture and they spend many happy hours reading books together. A Special Care Counselor by profession, Laura has co-led and developed programs for seniors with dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease. She has a passion for the topic of neuroscience and wellness.

Throughout the years she has met and worked with wonderful publishers, both traditional and indie, as well as publicists and authors. Best of all, she discovered the world of book bloggers–a community of special people who spend their precious time sharing their love of books and all things related to books.

Taking part in book tours has always made Laura feel more connected to authors and the publishing field. She organized her own virtual tour when her book was published and she learned several things. As an author, it exposed her to actual reader views and social media. As a book blogger and book tour organizer, it taught her the amount of work it entailed. And she loves it!

You can find Laura blogging at Library of Clean Reads and Essentially Italian. She is the owner of iRead Book Tours,  Italy Book Tours, and Je Lis Blog Tours.

Meet the author:

Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer and speaker with a passion for interviewing. Her career as a writer began in an unusual way, by answering a Craigslist ad. It was while conducting her first interview the world shifted – she had found her passion. Since 2006, she has interviewed over 150 people from as near as her hometown of Vancouver, Canada, and as far away as South Africa.

Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a one-on-one interview with an internationally recognized artist, the goal is the same-to give wings to the unique journeys of inspiring individuals. This goal first led the author to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on professionals working in the fashion industry paired with photography and illustrations by local artists. Then in 2015, Wilson took her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book, the first in a series featuring the lives of real people living real lives.

REVIEW:

This novel is set in different worlds, one a fantasy and the other in 1930’s Chicago.  The novel begins with the fantasy world which, to be honest, had me totally confused.  I was about to stop reading the book when pouf! we are transported to Chicago during the the Great Depression and we meet Charlie, an orphan with more guts than common sense (but who has a really good heart) who takes a foundling under his wing.  This particular foundling is not of his world and even though Charlie doesn’t really understand where he’s from, he is committed to making sure he’s safe.

Times are hard and and the local gangs threaten from every corner.  Charlie must use his street smarts to stay alive and protect “Buck” as he affectionately calls his foundling.

This novel is part of a series as the novel abruptly comes to an end.  We are bound to learn more about the “other world” in the next part (I hope so because I  feel that this fantasy world wasn’t adequately developed in this first instalment). Charlie has a way of “growing on you” and I’m sure we’ll find out more about this spunky little guy in the next part of the story.

Book Description:

It’s election time in Spencer, Maryland, and the race for mayor is not a pretty one. In recent years, the small resort town has become divided between the local year-round residents who have enjoyed their rural way of life and the city dwellers moving into their mansions, taking over the town council, and proceeding to turn Deep Creek Lake into a closed gate community—complete with a host of regulations for everything from speed limits to clothes lines.

When the political parties force-feed two unsavory mayoral nominees on the town residents, Police Chief David O’Callaghan decides to make a statement—by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s German shepherd, to run as mayor of Spencer!

What starts out as a joke turns into a disaster when overnight Gnarly becomes the front runner—at which point his political enemies take a page straight out of Politics 101. What do you do when you’re behind in a race? Dig up dirt on the front runner, of course.

Seemingly, someone is not content to rest with simply embarrassing the front runner by publicizing his dishonorable discharge from the United States Army, but to throw in a murder for good measure. With murder on the ballot, Mac Faraday and the gang—including old friends from past cases—dive in to clear Gnarly’s name, catch a killer, and save Spencer!

Book Description:

Matt Tremain publishes Verité, a modest blog dedicated to writing about the truth and exposing scams. Currently, he’s following up on rumors concerning something called CleanSweep, a mysterious project in Toronto, Canada.

Matt gets his break when a whistleblower connects CleanSweep to billionaire Charles Claussen. Claussen plans to rid Toronto of undesirables, beginning with street people and extending to any citizens who don’t match Claussen’s restrictive screening matrix.

With the help of a high-ranking government official, Claussen plans to incite riots and violent unrest, conning Torontonians into sacrificing privacy and civil liberties for illusionary security and safety. Toronto will be reduced to a repressive city-state.

The information overwhelms Matt, who doubts he has the courage, skill, or readership to take on CleanSweep. But the murder of his source convinces the blogger to take a stand—although he’s too late to prevent chaos from gripping Toronto’s streets.

To get the word out, Matt’s going to need allies. He may have found some in a Toronto police detective and a local TV reporter pursuing the same story—presuming they aren’t allied with Claussen. If they are, Matt’s going to become yet another victim of CleanSweep, and the truth will be buried forever.

Meet the author:

Born in Iowa, Chuck Waldron lived in Ontario, Canada, before relocating to Florida’s Treasure Coast. Over the years, he’s held many jobs. The ones he can mention in print include US Army soldier, truck driver, office manager, mailman, real estate salesman, social worker, hardware store clerk, and shuttle driver.

Fate played a crucial role when he walked into his first writing class, and he still honors the memory of the teacher, Henrietta. She gave him permission to write. That—along with countless writing groups, classes, seminars, and much sweat—has resulted in over fifty short stories and four novels.

Waldron often likes to pretend interest, lacks perseverance, and could generally use a good talking to—until it comes to his writing, that is. He and his wife Suzanne reside in Port St. Lucie, Florida. While keeping an eye out for hurricanes, alligators, and Burmese pythons, he’s busy writing his next novel

The Journey to The CleanSweep Conspiracy

Thanks for having me and allowing me the chance to talk about The CleanSweep Conspiracy, my newest novel, polished, printed and searching for new readers.

As I planned the launch party, I was reminded of what Winston Churchill said: “Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with it is a toy and amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.”

That sent me back to my notes, reflecting on the beginning of the adventure. I looked at the first word, the first sentence, and the first paragraph of the first draft of The CleanSweep Conspiracy. None of those first words survived the journey, making into the final version. My latest adventure was a trip that took far longer than expected. How many times did I ask myself along the way, “Are we there yet?”

The first person I met on this writing journey was the main character in the story, Matt. I’m not clear on just how and where we met. It might have been a waking-up-in-the morning half dream. It might have been a casual thought as I was driving. Regardless, Matt turned out to be the perfect person for the story. Matt was perfect because he’s not a superhero. Far from it, he’s more like the majority of us. He’s someone who would have gone unnoticed if he hadn’t stepped into the heart of the story. Once there he chose courage and to do what needed to be done, in spite of his fear telling him to do otherwise.

There’s a sign at the entrance to Winchester Cathedral: “You are entering a conversation that began long before you were born and will continue long after you are dead.”  It speaks to a continuum. We think everything around us is new when we are only living at a point on that continuum. Matt was about to find himself entering a story, a conversation that started before he was born, and will likely continue long after he is gone.

Matt Tremain, a shy, private person, discovered a passion for writing blogs—a mission that propelled him into investigative reporting. A tipster named Tanner warned him about a diabolical scheme; Matt simply couldn’t close his eyes to it. After Tanner had been killed, Matt honored his memory by going forward to investigate the truth behind the conspiracy. He met a television reporter and a cameraman also investigating the intrigue. Would they be potential partners or rivals, he wondered? A detective offered his assistance, but Matt was unsure of his real motivation. When Matt Tremain and his friends are forced to go on the run, evading the newly-formed security teams, they must expose the truth before they are discovered, arrested and perhaps exterminated themselves…

The CleanSweep Conspiracy takes place in a Toronto, but it could never happen for real, right? I can only hope not. We are all trying to come to terms with balancing the need for a sense of security with our privacy. What are we willing to trade for that feeling as we move through the day being photographed and video recorded by traffic cameras, convenience store video cams, the lens of an ATM, and so much more.

This has been especially true since the 9/11 wake-up call. And we saw how quick cameras were to put together what happened with the bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Yet, how much of our privacy do we need to give up?

My story has an evil character, the anti-hero and the group he organized to instigate mayhem and destruction, a group he calls the Free Eagle Militia. He tells his co-conspirators with bluntness, “Brunner’s hooligan, his so-called Free Eagle Militia, will create a climate so frightening that everyone, even the sniveling liberals, will beg for security. When they do, CleanSweep will be the answer to their prayers. CleanSweep will step forward, and the public disturbances will be put down. Citizens will thank us.”

Here’s what one author said about The CleanSweep Conspiracy. “This is a fast-paced novel, a page-turner filled with fascinating characters, a story about a blogger trying to gather proof of a conspiracy. Set in the near future, a fanatical group is planning to upset the social order, paving the way for their group to take total control.” She went on to say, “The premise is disturbingly believable.”

Book review / guest post / giveaway: KATHRYN KELLY: The Moll Behind “Machine Gun” Kelly by Barbara Casey

Book Title:  KATHRYN KELLY: The Moll Behind “Machine Gun” Kelly by Barbara Casey
Category:  Adult non-fiction, 196 pages
Genre:  Biography / true crime
Publisher:  Strategic Media Books
Release date:  February 2016
Available for review in:  Print,  PDF
Will send print books:  Internationally
Tour dates:  May 2 – 13, 2016
Content Rating:  PG-13 (There are some expletives and descriptions of crimes, although nothing gory or too graphic)

Book Description:

Kathryn Kelly: The Moll Behind “Machine Gun” Kelly is a biography of the woman who made a career of crime. With a lust for danger, she masterminded the crimes that took her and her husband, and others who included her own mother and stepfather, on a spree across Minnesota, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Texas. Starting with smaller crimes that included bootlegging, smuggling liquor onto an Oklahoma Indian reservation, and other petty crimes, she encouraged her husband, George Barnes aka George Kelly, toward a life of more serious criminal activity that eventually escalated into bank robberies, kidnapping and extortion.

Many believe that it was Kathryn, after giving him a machine gun, who developed George’s feared persona and the name of Machine Gun Kelly. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover was even convinced that the two were somehow connected in the Lindbergh kidnapping. Kathryn and Machine Gun Kelly were eventually captured after kidnapping Charles Urschel, a wealthy Oklahoma City oilman, and collecting a $200,000 ransom the largest ransom ever paid at that time.

Eventually, the two were captured in Memphis, where Kelly had grown up as a boy. During their trial in Oklahoma City, movie cameras were allowed into the courtroom for the first time as curious spectators across the nation watched. Kathryn, while claiming to be an innocent victim in a bad marriage, remained unrepentant, smiling and primping for the cameras, and writing threatening letters to the judge and attorneys assigned to the case as well as her victims.

Convicted in 1933, Kathryn served twenty-five years of her life sentence at FPC Alderson, West Virginia, when in 1958 she was finally released into obscurity. Although much has been written about Machine Gun Kelly, there is very little known about Kathryn.

Through narrative, FBI files, rare quotes from George Kelly’s son and other relatives and associates, extensive research, and several photographs, Kathryn Kelly ¬The Moll behind Machine Gun Kelly is the first book ever written about a woman who chose to follow a life of crime during the Prohibition era.

KATHRYN KELLY and the “Trial of the Century” by Barbara Casey

Several years ago, thousands of our citizens shivered in fear of a kidnapper whose name had much to do with the terror he engendered: he was called Machine Gun Kelly. However, there was someone far more dangerous than Machine Gun Kelly. That was Machine Gun Kelly’s wife.

J. Edgar Hoover, 1938, Persons in Hiding

In Oklahoma City, the case was being tried in the building that housed the post office, federal offices, and courthouse. Surrounded by armed officers, entry into the courtroom was allowed only with a pass after taking an elevator to the seventh floor and then climbing two flights of stairs to the ninth floor. In addition, everyone was required to be “patted down.” Inside, there wasn’t an empty seat available, the “electric air charged with excitement,” as it was reported on film. It was the first time movie equipment with sound had been permitted in a federal courtroom.

There were other “firsts” as well. It was the first kidnapping trial after the passage of the “Lindbergh Law,” making kidnapping a federal crime. It was the first major case solved by J. Edgar Hoover’s evolving and powerful Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was the first crime in which defendants were transported by airplane. And, at the time, it was the largest ransom ever paid—two hundred thousand dollars, the equivalent of about three million dollars in today’s currency. The date was October 12, 1933, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly and his wife, Kathryn, were on trial for the kidnapping of wealthy Oklahoma City oil man, Charles F. Urschel.

From the old photographs and film footage that have survived, George appears uneasy and sullen, wearing a dark suit, silk tie, and white shirt; and even though smoking was forbidden in the courtroom, cameramen captured him smoking several cigarettes. The facial cuts and large bump on the side of his head that he had received from federal agent J. C. White two days earlier are also visible.

Kathryn seems to have enjoyed the attention as she fluffs her hair and smiles confidently into the flashing and whirring cameras and posing for newsreel cameramen from Fox, Paramount, and other agencies that had followed them to Oklahoma City from Memphis where they were arrested. Fashionably dressed in high heels, a black satin dress decorated with feather epaulettes, and a hat perched jauntily on one side of her head, the members of the press and spectators alike were captivated by this tall, attractive, green-eyed brunette.

Many brought their lunch so as not to lose their seats. Some members of the press noted the “Roman holiday” atmosphere. Everyone watched as Kathryn and her husband, the notorious Machine Gun Kelly, awaited their much-anticipated verdicts.

REVIEW:

Moll:  noun,  Slang.
1.   a female companion of a criminal.
2.  a female criminal
.

Who likes a good gangster movie?  Then this book is just for you. Kathryn Kelly:  The Moll Behind Machine Gun Kelly recounts the tumultuous activities of Kathryn and George Kelly as they rise from petty crime, bootlegging, bank robberies and eventually into kidnapping.  Both were raised during the 30’s when poverty was rampant and prohibition was spawning bootleggers all over the country.

The book reveals much about Kathryn’s personality – from her upbringing in a poor farming family to a swanky and confident woman enjoying the good life of travel, furs, jewellery and cars – and always one step ahead of the law.
.
Calculating and intelligent, she falls for George Kelly, a criminal with a larger-than-life reputation.  Kathryn’s manipulation of the media increases her husband’s notoriety.  They are untouchable.  Or so they think.
.
I enjoy history and followed their stories with interest.  The many photographs and excerpts of documentation written by Kathryn added much to the story and I was amused by the expressions used during the time.  My father read the book as well and told me how much he enjoyed it.
.
This was a fascinating glimpse into the life of a daring and ambitious woman during the depression.  Even if you aren’t a history buff, I’m sure you will find it fascinating.
