In a massive spaceship destined for Alpha Centauri B, with a genesis crew including Zip the telepathic dog, his old friendly nemesis Cramer, and a computer being named Ra (now inhabiting a human form and calling herself Aten), Simon Bank emerges from a hundred-year coma and is hailed as an awakened hero. Stuck with unwanted responsibility, he is forced to try to solve the entire enigma of the universe—a small undertaking—before the spaceship, his friends, and all life on Earth are swatted out of existence by super beings he has accidentally awakened.

Simon’s only hope is to plunge into other dimensions with his mind—into the secrets of the universe’s pan-dimensions—as only he knows how. The fate of all life hangs in the balance as he struggles to prove himself worthy of the Path and the absolute trust his friends place in him. Simon knows all too well that if he fails there is no hope—none at all—for anyone, and that includes his best friend, an artificial intelligence computer called Apollo, which he sadly left behind. Besides, Zip would not be pleased, either.

For fans of cyberpunk and classic science fiction,  Reaching Angelica (Yucca Publishing; February 2, 2016; 978-1-63158-069-7) is the second book in Peter Riva’s Tag trilogy, the comic, thrilling, and continuing saga of Simon Bank—ex–master system computer wrangler and very unlikely galactic hero.

GUEST POST:
.
Life is all about exploration Debra. I am reasonably well traveled (about 60 countries, four continents) and nothing – nothing- is more exhilarating that an arrival at a destination where you have not been before. The smells, tastes, sounds, people, culture… all these are thankfully different and enlivening for the spirit. Languages? No problem. I always consider the fault is mine so I strive to fit in, learn, adapt.
.
In the early 80’s I had a chance to work with the astronauts and then with Arthur C. Clarke who wrote the foreword to “Sightseeing; A Space Exploration” – a book on handheld photography in space. Arthur told me his greatest regret was never to travel into space. As I age it has become increasingly clear I too will fail to make the trip. One way? Sure, why not. Think of what you could see and learn! Time doesn’t matter. The quality of the time does. One of the best days I ever spent was on a raft in the Rift Valley in Africa. Just one day, but oh, my God, what a day.
.
I have represented some of the great photographers of the 20th century, one of whom, Lucien Clergue, passed away recently. Lucien and I spent many weeks traveling together, some of them with Ansel Adams, and the way he saw things my pathetic eye missed was always an instruction. Actually, I guess that’s the trick, to always want to learn. That’s what my books are really about, eye-openers, instruction dressed up as story and plot. I hope you and your followers enjoy them!

Review:

Two young men from contrasting backgrounds, the first, Guy Erma, an aspiring dome guard and the second, Teodor the heir to the throne of Freyne live in very different circles.  Yet, they will soon discover that their paths will cross and they will need each other to stay alive.  The Prince and the Pauper meet up in a parallel universe of high fashion, giant cats and cy-sects. (and a really cute alien girl!)

This intriguing sci-fi novel by Sally Ann Melia is my first real forage into the young adult sci-fi genre.  The story was incredibly detailed, the characters well-developed and the story line nail-biting exciting!

What I really liked in this first part of the Guy Erma trilogy were the illustrations of some of the main characters as well as a small drawing of the Dome itself.  I look forward to part 2 of this trilogy – Hunter!

Review:

In part two of Guy Erma and the Son of Empire, Sayginn, Regent of Freyne, Teodor’s mother, enlists the aid of ally Karl Valvanchi, a Zaracan warrior of Sas Dorana to find her kidnapped son. Sayginn, as Queen Regent, is expected to marry the Emperor in order to form an alliance and produce heirs for the empire. Despite the fact that they come from different worlds and look completely different from each other, Sayginn and Karl form an unexpected bond of trust and are able to read each other’s thoughts. With their combined telepathy they know that Theodor is alive but have no idea of his condition or whereabouts.

Together with Guy Erma “who spins like the wind and bites like a goran”, they put together a rescue mission. The mission is dangerous, as they must face live Battle Borgs, half men-half-machines who obey without conscience. As hostages, both Guy and Teodor, both highly skilled athletes and students in combat are pitted against each other to figh to the death. Guy is given the command to kill as Prince Teodor must be removed as heir. Guy must obey.

This incredible story continues with the same amount of vivid imagery and description as the first segement, Kidnap. Different storylines begin to blend together and we find ourselves cheering for both Guy and Teodor.

Although I enjoy watching sci-fi and fantasy films, I am completely new to reading these genres. This complex story had me a bit befuddled at the beginning but as I continued reading on everything fell into place. Looking forward to part 3 – Exile.

Review:

I’m new to the sci-fi genre and didn’t know what to expect when I began to read this story. The storyline immediately pulled me in but I became temporarily confused when two other story lines began to develop. I hung in there because I could see that the characters were being developed.

The three stories begin to blend together and we have an intriguing and exciting adventure. There is Guy, an orphan but very talented student whose desire is to join the Dome Elite. There is also Karl Valvanchi, a Zaracan warrior and shape-shifter from Sas Daron and finally Prince Regent Theodor from Freyne 2, whose empire is under threat. The manner in which these three characters are brought together shows depth and, although there were a lot of details, with time they added to the richness of the plot.

I enjoyed the book because it was exciting, fast paced and an intelligent read. It was written for young adults but any mature person would certainly enjoy it. I look forward to the next installment!

Review:

In part 3 of Guy Erma and Son of Empire we learn a bit more about the structure and size of the Dome itself. Guy and Teodor are together when Karl Valvanchi finally manages to reach him using telepathy. Teodor still doesn’t understand that Karl is trying to help him, all he knows is that he was told, that he is “Killer Valvanchi”. Guy has doubts about which side he is fighting for but knows that both of them are in trouble and need to stay together in order to survive.

Emperor Frederon seems unable to help Sayginn, Teodor’s mother to rescue her son. Sayginn is distraught and finally sees the Emperor for what he really is.

Princess Nell Valvanchi of the Zaracan Democratic Union has a keep interest in not only intergalactic politics but in Teodor himself. She finally reveals her true image to him as all along she has maintained her camouflage skills. The plot continues as another dangerous plot is revealed that could threaten all of Freyne and everyone in it. Can these three young people work together to prevent it?  An exciting conclusion to the third book in the Guy Erma Series. The plot was left open for a sequel (I hope!)

Book Review: Aoleon The Martian Girl: A Science Fiction and Fantasy Saga – Part 5: The Great Pyramid of Cydonia, written and illustrated by Brent LeVasseur

Book Description:

They finally meet Pax – the Martian who originally set them out on the mission to discover the truth about the Luminon and his plans to invade Earth. However Pax is not who he seems to be, and through a turn of events, they uncover the true power behind all that has been happening on Mars.

Will they be able to rescue Aoléon’s parents and save Earth from invasion?

Review:

“This was a group  of  two kids, a beat-up old robot, a loyal pet moog, and a single, renegade Procyon against an overwhelming and superior fighting force.”

Book number five has so many cool words, I even learned a new verb: gooified!  There was one illustration that really impressed me, that of Gilbert staring at earth through the spaceship window but seeing his own reflection. I found it to be quite moving, that despite being in the middle of saving the world and mars he still yearns for his room back home in Nebraska.

Although this entire book was meant for children, there was a fair bit of tongue-in-cheek humour that would amuse an adult as well as references to other movies that a child may not pick up on.  There were also other subtle, more serious moral messages that were threaded throughout the storyline that would give a younger (or older) thinker something to meditate on.

This is the wind-down for the Aoleon the Martian Girl series and I was sad to see it come to an end.  I’m going to miss all the characters, even Helios the Robot, he has such a sense of humour!  Younger boys, especially will love the action and the humour of this segment.

Book Trailer

Review:

Aoleon and Gilbert are on a dangerous mission to rescue her parents, a seemingly impossible task.  Even Bizwat is discouraged by the difficulty of their undertaking.  Their spaceship is blown up and well, you gotta read the rest yourself!

Part four of Aoleon’s adventure is by far the goofiest!    Here are some of my favourite quotes:  “Go ahead. Make my millennium”, “we stand an excellent chance of catching the Martians with their cheeks in the wind” and “this guy is not firing on all nanoprocessors.”

There is still loads of adventure and excitement (by the way DON’T pick the flowers in the desert) as well as a fair bit of cheekiness pointed at the, ahem, “powers that be” (it’s all in good fun though!). The picture of the White House Situation Room was really cool!  There weren’t as many pictures in this segment, and some parts of the story were a little hard to grasp because of the technical explanations.  But there’s a lot to tickle your funny bone!
